Commenting upon the Childcare Commission, Anne Longfield OBE, Chief Executive of 4Children said:
For parents struggling with the pressures of work, the cost of childcare and changes to benefits, the Government’s Childcare Commission will be welcome news for many.
As the costs of living continue to mount and the price of childcare is sometimes the equivalent of a family mortgage, many parents are having to take drastic measures – from shift parenting, to giving up work altogether - to ensure that their children are looked after and given the care that they deserve. Even when children go to school, the challenges remain as great, with a myriad of further childcare arrangements necessary for before school, after school and during school holidays.
This is a timely review which has the potential to give children and parents the support and care that they need right now. Whilst the price may be daunting, Government must work to implement the proposals and make the investment needed as the cost of high quality childcare ultimately deserves nothing less.”
4Children
4Children is the national charity all about children and families. We have spearheaded a joined-up, integrated approach to children’s services and work with a wide range of partners around the country to ensure children and families have access to the services and support they need in their communities. We run Sure Start Children’s Centres as well as family and youth services across Britain.
We develop, influence and shape national policy on all aspects of the lives of children, young people and families. As the Government’s strategic partner for early years and childcare we have a crucial role in co-producing policy with the Department of Education and representing the sector’s views and experiences. Our national campaigns, like Give Me Strength, change policy and practice and put the needs of children and families on the political and policy agenda.
