Come and Play enables sustainable and enjoyable music making activities in children’s out of school clubs. The aim has been achieved in Plymouth, through the strengthening of links between Plymouth Music Zone and the playworkers who run music making sessions with the children.
The sustainability of the project in Plymouth was demonstrated at a special music training day, held at the Plymouth Music Zone, as part of the Come and Play programme. This provided an opportunity to introduce the Come and Play resource pack, recently launched to guide playworkers on leading music sessions for children in a step-by-step approach, using simple and fun activities.
Come and Play is run by the national charity 4Children with support from Youth Music and is a music making initiative for children aged 4-14 years, attending out of school clubs and holiday play schemes. The programme gives the children an opportunity to become involved in music through creative workshops led by experienced musicians.
Mark Trewin from the Plymouth Music Zone led the training day on the resource pack which was attended by 22 playworkers and some young people who had taken part in the Come and Play programme. Mark introduced the playworkers to creative music activities from percussion and rhythmic games to African drumming skills and then explored the use of the resource pack.
The feed-back from the day was very positive as it gave the playworkers an opportunity to learn new skills. It also provided a chance for them to express their views on the successful Come and Play programme, which has run at after school and holiday play schemes across Plymouth.
Viv Roberts, Play Development Officer at Plymouth City Council said, “The training day was pitched at exactly the right level to meet the needs of the playworkers. They were also really pleased to have the chance to get together after the eight week Come and Play programme, which has run in each of their clubs. We are now looking at running further music training sessions for other playworkers working on different child related projects, demonstrating how sustainable the music project has become in Plymouth”.
Mark said, “We were really pleased at the response to the training session from the playworkers, which has demonstrated the development of a successful and sustainable partnership of a music organisation and the Come and Play project”.
