7 Clubs worked with The Canned Performance Company on Come and Play in 2004.
The Canned Performance Company consists of 4 qualified musicians, composers and arts managers. Martin Fulker, Nicola Fulker, Andrew Thorne and Catherine Smith all studied at Dartington College of Arts, Devon.

The Canned Performance Company examines the process of musical composition through performances and interactive workshops. The workshop participants will experience instruments and live contemporary music, leading to the composition, notation and performance of their own music. The wide experience of The Canned Performance Company enables them to communicate musical information to any age range or ability.

They work extensively throughout the south of England and have facilitated the ’Come and Play’ music workshops in association with Youth Music and 4 Children.

Project outline
Canned Performance worked with seven after school clubs. Children were given access to a range of instruments. Throughout the seven sessions the children participated in a range of activities that lead them towards composing their own piece of music, the style was totally up to them! There was an emphasis on live music and performance and the project culminated in a performance session open to family and friends. The instruments used at the sessions were made available to all the clubs for use in their own sessions, they are now stored at a branch of the toy library in Wimborne. The training for club leaders centred around the use of the instruments and simple activities to have a go at in their own clubs.

New Come and Play music initiative with the Canned Performance Company
During the spring and summer of 2004 The Canned Performance Company ran a series of music composition workshops as part of 4Children’s Come and Play programme which was supported by Youth Music. They worked with seven out-of-school clubs in east Dorset. Each club created new music which was recorded or performed as part of a grand performance day held in Wimborne.

The young people involved, experimented with a wide variety of musical styles, instruments, found sounds, recording and composition techniques. Each club also performed the song Hey Calypso! written by members of The Canned Performance Company. As part of the project a selection of instruments were bought and used by the clubs. The instruments have been deposited in a local toy library for the clubs to use and continue to enjoy musical activities into the future.

Resource Pack Training
Canned Performance Company New Come and Play Music Workshop Project in Weymouth and Puddletown. January - March 2005

Following the first Come and Play music project in Dorset, in partnership with 4Children, Youth Music and Dorset Surestart, the Canned Performance Company developed the project with sessions based upon 4Children’s out of school club music resource pack. The sessions included a practical workshop, with musicians from Canned working with the children, followed by time spent with the play leaders helping the club to run some music activities of their own with the help of the resource pack. A second visit to each club from Canned provided support and guidance with a session run by the play leaders themselves at a latter date. Once again the Come and Play programme is providing children with access to new musical actives and instruments whilst providing skill development for play leaders.
