“Music is not just an artistic discipline, nor is it a skill that is learned and either revisited or forgotten, music is the most natural and instinctive form of communication that we are all gifted with from birth. When children have the opportunity to participate in meaningful music making all social, economic barriers are removed. Through the excellent Come and Play programme, Plymouth Music Zone has engaged with eight very different after school settings with the aim of providing basic music leadership skills, creative and stimulating workshops and good quality instruments that the children and the centres can access beyond the Come and Play projects life. This unique scheme has seen children from diverse backgrounds with equally diverse educational needs and a variety of ages come together as a unit of proficient music makers who are confident in their ability, willing to express themselves in a positive way and are proud to be associated with one another. When this project began our Music Leaders were faced with shy, reluctant and bewildered staff and children who were really not sure of what their part was in this project. Within just eight weeks many of the centre’s oozed with confidence, play workers were willing to confidently lead creative music making, children were engaged with the new skills they had acquired and had a strong desire for more, parents commented on the rapid change in the confidence in their children and musicians had reaffirmed their beliefs that their art wasn’t to be taken at face value as it has the power to transform lives and communities. It is projects like Come and Play that demonstrate music should be a basic educational and social right of all learners.” Mark Trewin, Director - Plymouth Music Zone
