Modernising alternative provision for young people
In response to the Back on Track: A strategy for modernising alternative provision for young people White Paper, published on 20 May 2008 by the Department for Children, Schools and Families, Anne Longfield OBE, Chief Executive of 4Children, said:
"The proposals set out by the DCSF to improve society’s offering for young people who do not attend school are a welcome step towards supporting some of the most vulnerable and extremely disadvantaged young people in society. "The 135,000 young people who spend time in alternative provision each year are among society’s most vulnerable, and urgently need high quality support if they are to achieve their potential in adulthood and avoid the risk of falling into anti-social behaviour. "Much progress has been made in ensuring that schools are at the hub of their communities and that young people are increasingly able to access exciting opportunities to develop through their school – and we must make sure that children outside school are also able to benefit from these new initiatives."
