21st Century Schools White Paper - 4Children's response
Commenting on the 21st Century Schools White Paper, released on 30 June, Anne Longfield OBE, Chief Executive of 4Children said: “4Children welcomes plans for 21st Century Schools as ambitious and as having huge potential – if they are given the priority and the political backing to see them through.
“4Children has long advocated the potential for schools to become ‘community hubs’ – at the heart of the community and trusted by all. Developments over recent years to provide extended services and involve parents more fully are starting to have an effect. These plans capture the best of these developments and provide a framework for all schools to follow.
“However it is in the area of the ‘report card’ and the partnership with parents that the 21st Century School has most potential – especially in changing the culture around secondary education. Few parents are actively engaged in their children’s secondary school at the moment – something which limits children’s ability to flourish and makes intervention much more difficult when things go wrong. If 21st Century Schools can change this, then they will have achieved a great deal.”
