Playday 2010
Playday - Join in the fun!
Playday is the annual celebration of children’s right to play, a national day highlighting the importance of play in children’s lives. Traditionally held on the first Wednesday in August, Playday 2010 takes place on 4 August. 4Children is one of the national organisations supporting Playday.
On Playday and throughout the summer, children, young people and communities will get out and play at hundreds of locally organised events. Last year, over 830 events took place across the UK, and this year is set to be even bigger!
Playday is coordinated by Play England, working in partnership with Play Wales, Play Scotland and PlayBoard Northern Ireland and a national steering group. Funding is provided by the Big Lottery Fund and supporters and funders of local events across the UK. If you’re looking for funding for your Playday event, view the Playday funding guidance by clicking here.
As well as a celebration, Playday is an opportunity to campaign on issues affecting children’s play. For Playday 2010, Play England and partners have launched the Our place campaign. The campaign tackles the restrictions faced by children wanting to play outside where they live, and highlights the role of communities in shaping childhood.
Lots of individuals and organisations will be getting involved to celebrate in parks, town centres, community settings, and local neighbourhoods. Playday events are often organised by play associations, holiday playschemes, schools and extended services, playgroups, residents’ associations, local authorities, community groups, or simply someone who wants to give children and young people the opportunity to play locally for the day.
The Playday 2010 Get organised! guide is full of useful information to help plan a Playday event. To download or order a copy of the guide, visit the Resources section of the Playday website by clicking here. To find out more about Playday and how you can get involved, visit www.playday.org.uk.
