Each year, students have the opportunity to take part in a competition to be the designer of the following year’s PLA publicity materials, including the magazine.

Pamela Ossola, the student who designed the PLA 2006 materials, drew on urban culture in her designs. She was also inspired by Frances Lawrence’s observation: “Many young people involved in The Philip Lawrence Awards have to contend with difficulties and deprivation in their own lives but they rise above it to help the lives of others.” This is reflected in the simple yet strong layout and playful treatment of type.

“Coming from a different cultural background, I started on this project knowing very little about Philip Lawrence or the Philip Lawrence Awards founded by Frances Lawrence,” explains Pamela. ‘The ideals and aims of the PLA make me feel proud to be part of the Awards. I am able to contribute by communicating the ideas the PLA represents as well as the history of the Awards.”
