Awards Ceremony

The Bloomsbury Theatre is proud to host the Philip Lawrence Awards again this year. The theatre is a professionally run venue which is owned by UCL (University College London). The Awards are one of the highlights of our autumn season which also includes performances by professional companies and by student societies from UCL.

UCL is committed to education for global citizenship and to educational outreach; The Philip Lawrence Awards represent a significant part of the Theatre’s commitment to these agendas. These areas of work are supported by UCL’s Widening Participation Unit and UCL’s Vice-Provost’s Office. UCL’s Widening Participation Unit works to improve the participation in higher education of students, including those from backgrounds with little or no family experience of university, by raising their aspiration and achievement through visits to UCL and an outreach programme which includes summer schools, master classes and the provision by UCL staff and our team of Student Ambassadors of information and guidance on higher education choices.

Central School of Ballet is proud to participate in The Philip Lawrence Awards. Central takes talented young dancers and through excellent training, passionate dedication and sheer hard work it helps each individual develop the artistic, creative and technical ability to become professional dancers.

The school is committed to enabling young dancers access dance training regardless of background. Since being awarded Higher Education status and becoming an affiliate of the Conservatoire for Dance and Drama, Central has been able to offer HEFCE funded places for all EU students.

In 2007, third year students, Nick Peak and Sophie Allen, have devised and choreographed the performance working with the second year dancers of the course. In addition, to celebrate the eleventh anniversary of the Phillip Lawrence Awards, Nick and Sophie have held creative dance workshops with Year 5 students from Gloucester Primary School, Peckham. A selection of the children will perform their work with the dancers from Central.

Taking part in the Philip Lawrence Awards is always an enriching project for the Central students. Not only do they participate in a unique creative experience, but they also have the opportunity to work alongside the award winners who have achieved so much.

Trinity College of Music’s Junior Department is a Saturday school and we are delighted to be participating in The Philip Lawrence Awards Ceremony, performing a work by two of our Musicianship and Composition teachers.

Junior Trinity celebrated its Centenary in 2006. Today the Department continues to build on the pioneering work of the last century, whilst continually developing the curriculum to address the needs and aspirations of today’s talented young musicians.
