Sixty Plus Intergenerational Project

Sixty Plus Intergenerational Project

Is: A charity creating mutually beneficial partnerships between younger and older people
Based: North Kensington, London
Begun: 1997
Involves: 90 young people
Website: www.sixtyplus.org.uk

About: The Sixty Plus project works to overcome prejudices between younger and older people. Local sixth formers work as volunteers to help support older residents to remain independent. They offer reading and admin support to visually impaired older people, and tailored ICT and English language coaching to housebound older people. There is a strong element of mutual mentoring, and the project enables young people to develop their communications skills and confidence.

“When Constance sent her first email, it was so rewarding that after all our hard work she gained just a little bit more independence.”
“I’m learning a lot more about people in general…Thanks – I strongly believe the gap between old and young should close.”
