
Project Winners
2005 Winners
Ten groups of young people from across the UK won the prestigious Philip Lawrence Award in 2005. Sir Trevor McDonald presented the awards in a ceremony at the Bloomsbury Theatre, London on 6 December.
The winning groups bring together young people from a diverse range of backgrounds and tackle a range of important issues including: bullying, self-harming, racial harmony, improving environments for young people with progressive life-limiting conditions and helping older people remain independent.
2005 Winning projects:
· City Angels - Manor, Sheffield City Angels raises awareness of bullying and supports vulnerable young people in and out of school, through peer mentoring, role playing and group exercises.
· Youth2Youth – Acton, London Youth2Youth is a national helpline for under 19 year olds in need of emotional support. A team of 54 trained volunteers from diverse backgrounds, aged between 16 and 21, run the service.
· Springhill Community Radio – Rochdale, Lancashire Student led, Springhill Community Radio Project broadcasts music, news, interviews, information and advice over school lunch times to tackle anti-social issues including bullying, discrimination and racism.
· The Inclusion Zone based in Demelza House Children’s Hospice - Sittingbourne, Kent The Inclusion Zone is a purpose built, fully interactive adolescent room at Demelza House Children’s Hospice which was designed and developed from scratch by young people living with progressive life limiting medical conditions.
· Opal Project - Brackley, Northamptonshire The Opal Project provides support and information for young people who self harm. It was formed by two teenagers who were self-harmers and wanted to provide support and help people to understand the issues which lead young people to self harm.
· Dreamers project – Loughborough, Leicestershire Dreamers is a support group of over 85 young asylum seekers, refugees and British people challenging prejudice. It brings together young people from Iraq, Bangladesh, Somali, Albania, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Britain.
· Rathbone Outreach Project - Tower Hamlets, London Rathbone Outreach Project advances racial, cultural and religious harmony within White, Somalian and Bangladeshi communities in the local area.
· Mitalee Summer School Project – Luton, Bedfordshire The Mitalee Summer School Project provides young people with things to do including various indoor and outdoor sports activities and games, swimming, trips, martial arts, residential programmes, drama and film production and volunteering opportunities.
· Sixty Plus Intergenerational Project in North Kensington London The Sixty Plus Intergenerational Project works to overcome prejudices between younger and older people. Local sixth formers work as volunteers to help support older residents to remain independent.
· Teen Network Torbay project from Paignton in Devon Teen Network Torbay involves over 30 young people. TNT members are the voice of young people in Torbay, helping to develop and promote the rights and opportunities of young people.
