Nang! magazine
We are young people chosen each year from a Tower Hamlets Summer University journalism course, plus a core team, who write, produce and distribute our quarterly magazine on issues that affect young people
Who we are… We are eight young people who work on the magazine every week throughout the year, and there are up to 14 of us in the summer holidays, aged 14+
Where we’re based… London Borough of Tower Hamlets
When we started… July 2001
How we started… Our project began as a Tower Hamlets Summer University course where young people of any race or background could learn about the world of journalism. We aspired to produce a topical magazine relevant to and inspirational for us and our readership. In the process, we aimed to counter youth unemployment and stereotyping.
Our work… Our team of editors and writers are recruited each year from the Nang! summer holiday course. We work with a journalist and a designer to produce Nang! quarterly – including choosing the content, doing all the research and interviews. The magazine is distributed across 7 inner London boroughs.
Future plans… We are developing a Nang! website, and want to make the magazine a commercial, self funding venture by getting involved in the business aspects, managing our accounts and selling advertising space with support from the Summer University.

“If I wasn’t doing Nang! my time would’ve been spent unproductively. This gives young people the opportunity to better themselves while enjoying something… it keeps them off the streets which helps to reduce crime and anti-social behaviour.” Contributor to Nang!, 18
