Community Challenge

Community Challenge

We work to actively improve and develop the physical environment around our local estate and, in turn, the relationships among residents

Who we are…
Core group of 10, with 30 other young people involved per week on average

Where we’re based…
Sheffield, South Yorkshire

When we started…
April 2002

How we started…
Eight local young people wanted to address the issues of graffiti, vandalism, rubbish and anti-social behaviour on the estate and the bad feelings this caused. We successfully lobbied the community forum for better play provision and improved conditions on the estate via a ‘good, the bad and the ugly’ photographic audit.

Our work…
Each week we support young people through projects including literacy ‘buddying’, work with ‘juniors at risk’ and healthy physical activities such as ‘Recycle Cycles’ and our sculpture park and multisports zone. Our work to improve relationships includes gardening for elderly and vulnerable residents. And we represented the UK at an environmental awards ceremony in Sweden.

Future plans…
We plan to continue to train other young people and set up ‘Recycle Cycle’ projects across the Manor/Woodthorpe area. We also want to develop our literacy ‘buddying’ with 11 year olds at Woodthorpe Junior School, our ‘at risk juniors’ provision and our multisports area for community use.

“I’ve loved all of it. I still talk to people we met in Sweden. There were 9 other countries altogether. I love working on the sculpture park.”
