Frequently asked questions

What are the Grant Sessions at the nursery, and is my child eligible?

All 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to up to six terms of free early education – which at Carousel are called ‘Grant Sessions’ – before reaching statutory school age (the first term following their 5th birthday).

Children become eligible for a free place from 1 September, 1 January or 1 April following their 3rd birthday.

The Grant Sessions are free during term time. Any additional childcare services which exceed the free Grant Sessions (for example, during holiday time) are chargeable. See the Carousel Day Nursery price list for details.

How can the Working Tax Credit help our family?

We encourage parents/carers to find out about Working Tax Credit so that they can get help to pay their fees. Contact the HM Revenue & Customs Tax Credits Helpline on 0845 300 3900 for claim packs and more information, or the HM Revenue & Customs Web site: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/

The Working Tax Credit contains a childcare element which can form an important source of help with fees for low-waged parents/carers who are working more than 16 hours a week, and meet the eligibility criteria.

The childcare element of Working Tax Credit can be worth up to a maximum of 80% or up to £175 for one child (and £300 for two or more children) of the costs of registered or approved childcare per week that are taken into account when calculating Working Tax Credit.

The amount of Working Tax Credit awarded by the Inland Revenue depends on an employed parent’s:

  • Household income and savings
  • Number of children and their ages
  • Number of hours worked per week
  • Amount of eligible childcare charges paid

What are childcare vouchers?

From April 2006, each parent can pay up to £238 of their monthly childcare costs using vouchers or by direct payment from their employer. The first £55 a week of childcare vouchers used for registered or approved childcare is free of both tax and National Insurance.

Childcare vouchers can be used to pay for the care of children up to the age of 15 (until 1 September following their 15th birthday) or the age of 16 if they are disabled (until 1 September following their 16th birthday).
