Two Newcomer of the Year awards were presented this year, as there were two exceptional and equally deserving winners.
Michelle Cotterill registered as a childminder in 2007 and six months later was judged to be ‘Outstanding’ at her very first Ofsted inspection – despite having no formal experience as a childcare provider. Her high motivation with an elevated understanding of her role has helped her succeed. Michelle already has a comprehensive understanding of her role, which is demonstrated by her informed planning and the detailed policies and procedures she has in place.
Michelle takes the time to understand the needs of each child and regularly goes with the children on educational outings to parks, nature reserves and science centres. She also offers her support to families in need, such as providing extra care to children whose parent was suffering with post partum depression or taking a child’s parent to the doctor when taken ill. Michelle’s dedication to children shines through – she continues to volunteer with a local toddler group and at a local primary school.
Gerry Garvey may be in the minority as a male childcare worker, but he is one of the brightest newcomers of the year. A former military man, Gerry is also a kind, caring man who is always ready to play games with the children. He is very dedicated to his work, as evidence by that fact he is willing to rearrange his schedule in order to be able to supervise on his days off, despite the 40 mile trip to the nursery.
His commitment to children is also evident in that he has undertaken a Certificate in Professional Practice in Childcare, Learning, and Development and has also been accepted to study in an Early Years Professional programme. Gerry is definitely a Children’s Star – he’s so popular with the children that they ask about him when he’s gone. When he is there, the children seldom pass up a chance to visit his play room for a high five or a cuddle.
