4Children responds to Labour's child benefit announcement

22 September 2014

Responding to the Labour Party’s announcement that it intends to extend the 1% cap on child benefit rises to 2017, 4Children Chief Executive Anne Longfield OBE said:

This plan is likely to impact most on vulnerable families which depend on child benefit to pay for essential items for their children. The cost of food, heating and accommodation is increasing each year and freezing the amount of child benefit amounts to a real term cut. Many families are already struggling to make ends meet.

Families have carried the burden of much of the economic crisis to date and are now looking to political parties to step up and deliver bold and ambitious change for families.

In a YouGov poll we commissioned which was published today, 27% of voters across the country describe themselves as only just about coping and 10% say life is deteriorating. Today's announcement will add to the pressures of families already struggling with day to day life.
